The Rev. Dr. William J. Wolf, a theologian and Episcopal minister, died on June 6 at his home in Heath, Mass., at the age of 72. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, said his son, Edwin.

Dr. Wolf taught for more than 40 years at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. He retired in 1985 as the Howard Chandler Robbins Professor. He was active in the ecumenical movement and was an early advocate of the ordination of women in the Episcopal Church.

A graduate of Trinity College and of the Episcopal Theological School, as it was then known, he received his doctorate in theology at the Union Theological Seminary.

Dr. Wolf was the author, among other books, of ''The Almost Chosen People: A Study of the Religion of Abraham Lincoln,'' published in 1959.
